Scientists Say the Coronavirus Came to Earth on a Meteorite

Source - Scientists have long held that viruses, bacteria and strands of DNA exists in space carried on comets and meteorites.

They can drift into the Earth’s stratosphere before falling to the surface of the planet posing a risk to human health, they say.

The emergence of the novel coronavirus is thought to be the result of a specific meteorite hit recorded in China last autumn. 

Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology, said: “The sudden outbreak of a new coronavirus is very likely to have a space connection, the strong localisation of the virus within China is the most remarkable aspect of the disease. 

“In October last year a fragment of a comet exploded in a brief flash in North East China.

“We think it probable that this contained embedded within it a monoculture of infective 2019-nCoV virus particles that survived in the interior of the incandescent meteor.

“We consider the seemingly outrageous possibility that hundreds of trillions of infective viral particles were then released embedded in the form of fine carbonaceous dust.

“We believe infectious agents are prevalent in space, carried on comets, and can fall towards Earth through the troposphere.

I'm not even going to say "this is no time to panic." What I'll say instead is:

Welp, rest of the human race, it's been good knowin' ya. We had a pretty good run for a while there. A fraction of what the dinosaurs had. And really things only got going in the last few millennia, once we started domesticating animals, mastering agriculture and released Wham's "Make it Big" in 1984. But still, I think we can feel good about how much fun we squeezed into just a few thousand years. 

Nevertheless, I think we can face facts that it's pretty much over once the Almighty starts raining down the hellfire of infectious diseases on meteorites. As much as we all feel terrible for the people who've died and pray for those affected while putting our hopes in the ability of governments to contain the spread and modern medicine find a cure, what kind of hope is there when the universe itself starts throwing rocks of hot, microbial death at us? Borders are just lines on a map and not the least bit helpful when diseases are falling from space randomly and you're on a ball spinning through the galaxy.

I mean, here we've been, trying to cure the diseases we've already been dealing with. Trying to stay healthy. To eat right. Going to the gym. Using sunblock. Getting the cigarette monkey off our backs. Using seat belts. But ultimately in God's big "Survivor" tribal council, if He decides to vote us all off the island, there'll be nothing we can do to stop it. There is no Immunity Idol we can pull out of the bag before our cosmic torch gets snuffed. 

There's still hope they'll figure out how coronavirus works and come up with a vaccine and stop the suffering. Hope is all we have. Even if it's a fool's hope. But when the solar system is lousy with flying stones filled with microscopic diseases, we might as well just face facts. We're only just prolonging the inevitable.
